1. Purpose
This policy outlines Redlands Counselling Training’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, anti-discriminatory learning environment. It reflects our values and the practical steps we take to ensure a safe, accessible, and affirming space for all trainees.
2. Scope
This policy applies to:
- All students enrolled in Redlands Counselling Training programmes
- All tutors, supervisors, and assessors
- All training activities, including in-person and online delivery, curriculum design, recruitment, and feedback processes
3. Our Commitment
3.1 Inclusive Curriculum
We embed equality, inclusion, and anti-oppressive practice throughout our training programmes. This includes:
- Case studies and theory that reflect diverse lived experiences (e.g. race, gender identity, neurodivergence, class, sexuality, age, disability, faith)
- Critical engagement with the historical context of counselling theory and its limitations
- Encouragement of self-reflection around power, privilege and unconscious bias
3.2 Accessible Learning Environment
We aim to ensure all aspects of our teaching—whether in-person or online—are accessible:
- Adjustments are available for neurodivergent learners or those with additional needs
- Our venues and materials are selected with accessibility in mind
- We invite learners to share any access needs in confidence, so we can support them fully
3.3 Safe & Respectful Space
We cultivate a classroom culture grounded in mutual respect, curiosity, and accountability. Discriminatory language or behaviour is not tolerated. We work actively to:
- Promote identity-affirming discussions
- Encourage open dialogue, facilitated with sensitivity and care
- Address harm and repair where needed
3.4 Representation & Recruitment
We are committed to recruiting tutors and facilitators from diverse backgrounds to reflect the richness of our learning community. All staff undertake regular EID training as part of ongoing CPD.
3.5 Responsive Feedback Loops
We seek feedback regularly and act on it. This includes:
- Anonymous surveys for trainees
- EDI check-ins during reviews
- Policy reviews at least annually
Concerns related to equality or inclusion should be raised with a tutor or programme lead. These will be treated seriously and sensitively and handled in line with our centre’s formal complaints procedure.
4. Review & Updates
This policy is reviewed annually to ensure it remains current, effective, and aligned with best practice guidance.
