This Level 5 Certificate in Counselling Young People course leads to a tailor made CPCAB counselling qualification.
Humanistic counselling
The course is specifically designed to assist counsellors who currently work from a humanistic or integrative orientation, and who wish to extend their practice in order to work with young people. Students will learn to integrate skills and knowledge from a variety of sources, without compromising their underpinning principles of practice. These humanistic principles include Roger’s core conditions, for example:
- be authentic in relationship while also
- respecting the client’s own resources and potential for change
- therefore not require an ‘expert’ or external locus of evaluation.
Course content
The course will cover the following:
- Ethical, legal and professional issues, including safeguarding and Child Protection
- An integrative theoretical perspective to cover child and adolescent development
- Brief and time limited approaches
- Working in a multi-disciplinary context which might include schools, colleges and universities
- Issues around difference and diversity
- Creative skills and techniques
- Research findings
- Understanding mental health issues
- Reflective practice and self care
Outcomes
Course outcomes will include the competencies set out in the BACP ‘Counselling Young People (11-18) Training Curriculum’ and the BACP Ethical Framework.
