1. Purpose
This policy outlines the procedures for addressing breaches of conduct by students enrolled in Redlands Counselling Training programmes. It ensures that concerns are managed fairly, consistently, and in line with ethical and professional standards.
2. Scope
This policy applies to:
- All students enrolled in Redlands Counselling Training programmes
- All course-related activities, including face-to-face and remote learning, placements, supervision, and communication via digital platforms
3. Principles
- The disciplinary process is designed to be supportive, fair, and proportionate
- Students will be given the opportunity to respond, reflect, and learn from any concerns raised
- No formal disciplinary action will be taken until the matter has been fully investigated
- Students have the right to be accompanied by a peer or advocate during formal meetings
4. Informal Resolution
Where possible, concerns will be addressed informally through discussion with the student and their tutor. This may include:
- A verbal reminder of expectations
- A reflective conversation
- Agreed actions to improve conduct
If informal resolution is unsuccessful or inappropriate due to the nature of the concern, the formal disciplinary procedure will be initiated.
5. Formal Disciplinary Procedure
5.1 Stage 1: Investigation
- The concern is referred to the Course Director or Internal Verifier
- A written summary of the issue is compiled, and the student is invited to respond
- Evidence is reviewed, and a decision is made regarding next steps
5.2 Stage 2: Disciplinary Meeting
- A formal meeting is held with the student, chaired by the Course Director or nominee
- The student may be accompanied by a peer or advocate
- Outcomes may include:
- A verbal or written warning
- A reflective assignment
- Temporary suspension from training activities
- Referral to the Independent Complaints Reviewer for serious breaches
5.3 Stage 3: Final Action
- In cases of gross misconduct, including harassment, discrimination, or serious confidentiality breaches, the student may be removed from the course
- The decision will be communicated in writing and is final
6. Examples of Misconduct
Misconduct may include, but is not limited to:
- Harassment, bullying, or discriminatory behaviour
- Breach of confidentiality
- Dishonesty in academic work or placement documentation
- Inappropriate use of social media or messaging platforms
- Repeated lateness or non-attendance without valid reason
- Behaviour that undermines the safety or integrity of the learning environment
7. Review & Updates
This policy will be reviewed annually to ensure alignment with CPCAB and BACP guidance and evolving best practice.
